Typhoid Vaccination in Fiji

Indigenous iTaukei Fijians are experiencing a typhoid fever outbreak that began in the mid-2000s, largely affecting young adults in rural areas. LSHTM and partners at the World Health Organization, Australian Aid and international universities are supporting the Ministry of Health to determine risk factors and effective control measures, such as sanitation and hygiene improvements. The School has done a blood sample survey across the three main islands to see who has immune system signs of past typhoid infection. A key question is how many children as well as adults are affected. This information will be combined with computer modelling to help understand the best approaches to immunisation and other interventions.
